Casting System in 2010. Before auditioning SM, he took up vocal lessons and such even. On January 30, 2012 D.O. was formally introduced as a EXO-K member. On February 24, 2012 D.O. appeared in the EXO trailer. Prolog single "What Is Love" is sung only by D.O. and Baekhyun, released on January 30, 2012.

Byun Baek-hyun (변백현) or his stage name Baekhyun (백현) is member South Korean Boyband EXO-K, EXO Korean subgroup. He joined the school's musical band and won an award at a local rock festival. While studying for his entrance exams, he was scouted by an S.M. Entertainment casting agent and was cast into the company through the S.M. Casting System in 2011. He was immediately asked to join SM right in front of the gates, one of the SM representative was near his school and asked him does he want to join SM, and he officially joined SM in 2011. Oh Se-Hun (오세훈) or people knows as Sehun (세훈) is maknae in korea language or the youngest member of South Korean boyband EXO-K, EXO Korean Subgroup. In 2007, Sehun was scouted by a casting agent in the streets when he was twelve, and in 2008 he was successfully cast into S.M. Entertainment after going through four auditions in two years. On January 10, 2012 he was formally introduced as a EXO member. Equipped with powerful dance moves, Sehun showed off his expertise through a two man performance with fellow member Kai in a teaser clip. Sehun is a former Eoljjang or Ulzzangis a popular South Korean term literally meaning best face or good looking.

Kim Jong-in (김종인) or his stage name is Kai (카이) is member South Korean boyband EXO-K, EXO Korean Subgroup. In EXO-K, Kai become lead dancer. He was cast into S.M. Entertainment after winning in the company's Youth Best Contest in 2007. Prior to joining S.M. Entertainment, Kai was trained in ballet and jazz dance. In 2008, Kai made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" along with his bandmate EXO-K's Suho and Chanyeol.  Kai appeared in twelve more trailers in the next three months. He was the first of the twelve members to be formally introduced through teaser trailers. His teaser was released on December 23, 2011. Park Chan Yeol (박찬열) or people knows as Chanyeol (찬열) is member South Korean boyband EXO-K, EXO Korean Subgroup. On February 23, 2012 Chanyeol was the last finalist that appeared his tester. Chanyeol was cast into S.M. Entertainment through the S.M. Casting System in 2008, and made a brief appearance in TVXQ's music video, "HaHaHa Song" that same year with his bandmate EXO's Suho and Kai. Chanyeol is lead repper in EXO-K. When he was in high school, he formed a temporary band with his high school classmates, and won second place in a televised modeling contest. Kim Joon Myun (김준면) or his stage name Suho (수호) is the leader of the South Korean boyband EXO-K, EXO Korea subgroup. Suho name in Korea means Guard. Suho joined SM Entertainment after auditioning for the S.M. Casting System, a talent audition held by the company annually. He was the first EXO member to become an SM Entertainment trainee at sixteen years old. EXO is new South Korean and Chinese boyband from SM Entertainment in 2012. EXO can be interpreted as the objects that come from outside the solar system. EXO's name was taken from the word "exoplanets" or extrasolar planet is a planet beyond our solar system. So that EXO can be interpreted as the sun or the stars that come from another planet.

EXO formed in 2011 in Seoul, South Korea, EXO comprises twelve members separated into two subgroups, EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K for the Korea subgroup and EXO-M for the China subgroup. Each unit would promote the same releases in Korea and China respectively. EXO-K member are Suho as leader, Kai, Sehun, Baekhyun, D.O., and Chanyeol. EXO-M member are Kris as leader, Luhan, Tao, Chen, Lay, and Xiumin.

EXO is set to debut on April 9th, 2012 with their debut single 'Mama'. EXO-K made their debut performance on South Korea's music program The Music Trend, while EXO-M performed at China's 12th Yinyue Fengyun Bang Awards that same day. Before debuted, SM Entertainment their agency conducted a massive campaign to EXO. They released 23 teasers before their official debut, in which they showed of their skills for 100 days.


On January 29, 2012 each group released their prologue song "What is Love" through iTunes and various online retailers from China and South Korea. On March 9, the group released their second prologue single "History," which was written and produced by Thomas Troelsen and Remee.

On March 31st, 2012 in South Korea and April 1st, 2012 in China EXO held their showcase in Seoul's Olympic Stadium and in the Great Hall of the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China. Approximately 3,000 fans from 8,000 applicants attend the showcase. EXO pointed Super Junior Leeteuk as a host in this showcase event. Showcase is commemorating the 100th day of the first teaser released by SM Entertainment.
